The Starling Review: An Overview of Key Issues Related to Thyroid Hormone and Health

Tuesday June 14, 2005
The new "Starling Review: Thyroid Hormone in Health and Disease," published in the May 2005 Journal of Endocrinology, presents an excellent summary of the knowledge regarding the relationship between thyroid hormone and four key areas of health:
  • cardiovascular disease
  • osteoporosis
  • cancer
  • neurological problems.
The Starling Review touches on history of thyroid disease, and some interesting findings regarding linkages to cardiovascular problems -- especially atrial fibrillation. The issue of whether or not thyroid hormone replacement causes osteoporosis is also examined. New information on the linkage between thyroid disease and cancer risks is discussed. And, the impact of thyroid hormones on the neurological system, in particular, during pregnancy, is overviewed, and recommendations summarized.
