Two Thyroid Cancer Victims Win $500,000

Monday May 23, 2005
This past week, a federal jury awarded more than $500,000 to two thyroid cancer patients who claimed that their thyroid cancer resulted from exposure to radiation released at the government's Hanford nuclear plant.

The lawsuit was brought against General Electric Co., DuPont Co. and UNC Nuclear Inc., government contractors that ran operations at Hanford, manufacturing plutonium for bombs for four decades.

The jury was deadlocked in a decision as to whether another plaintiff's thyroid cancer was caused by Hanford's radiation, and the jury ruled against three cases where patients blamed autoimmune thyroid diseases on Hanford.

Both sides claimed victory based on the outcome.
