Eating Fat and Carbs Can Rev Up Metabolism

A diet rich in complex carbohydrates and monounsaturated fats can help speed up your metabolism, according to Dr. Fred Pescatore, author of The Hamptons Diet.

"While it's impossible to predict the precise level of increase in a person's metabolism," says Pescatore, "I believe it could be as much as 10 percent, depending on the individual."

Dr. Pescatore bases his claim on the results of several studies that show links between several of the foods he advocates eating in his diet and an increased metabolism.

The studies were conducted in the Menzies School of Health Research in Australia, Harvard University's Medical School, and Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Pescatore's diet is based on unprocessed foods rich in fiber and monounsaturated fats (especially macadamia nut oil) and discourages the consumption of refined sugars.

When selecting the foods available to dieters on the Hamptons diet, Dr. Pescatore chose those that will help dieters reach their weight-loss goals faster, while preserving the dieter's optimal health.

Dr. Fred Pescatore served as the medical director of the Atkins Center before opening his own practice in New York City.
