May 2004: New Guidelines Released Re: Thyroid Disease & Pregnancy
Back in the 1990s, I recommended that any woman contemplating pregnancy get a thyroid test. And that women with a family or personal history of thyroid or autoimmune disease absolutely be tested before and after conception. And that hypothyroid women be tested frequently throughout the pregnancy, because thyroid dosage requirements were likely to increase. And that thyroid antibody testing should be part of a fertility workup, and that antibodies may require treatment to ensure fertility and a healthy pregnancy. It seems that the endocrinologists have come around to sharing this opinion, as you'll read in announcements made this week by the American Thyroid Association.

May 2004: Endos Release Statement re: Thyroid/Pregnancy Connection
Pregnancy complications and problems with intellectual development are the focus of a new American Thyroid Association statement on thyroid health in pregnant women. Find out about the ATA's new recommendations, and their increasing awareness of the connection between thyroid status and fertility, pregnancy outcome and the development of your baby.
