Thyrolar Availability Problems

Friday December 12, 2003
According to Forest Pharmaceuticals, Thyrolar 1 is on a long-term backorder. This product must be revalidated due to a recent requirement by the Federal Drug Administration. The manufacturer does not anticipate releasing this product for a few months. However, they currently have three other strengths available. They include the Thyrolar ¼, ½ and 3.

As of March of 2007 I can’t get
Thyrolar in my Strength. I have been taking 1 1/2 by spliting the 1 in half because it’s not available in 1/2 strength. Now even the 1 strentgh is unavailable. I am getting the 3 strength and spliting that in half. What’s next? I have tried several differnt kinds of thyroid meds and the Thyrolar works by far the best for me. What’s going on? Why do they keep messing with our health? I had Thyroid Cancer and need thyroid medicine every day so don’t make it impossible to get. I went through this a few years ago and hated the Armour that I had to take. So please stop doing this every few years. Sylvia Pool

I am having the exact same problem with the Thyrolar….no one seems to be able to get it. I’m not sure what to do.

Same problem for me. But I did contact Forest Labs - the manufacturer, to see if could get a response about availability. Waiting for reply, and will post any reply I get.

This was the same mechanism I used during the last product drought, and was able to get an time estimate - which helped me plan a short-term medication change.

According to Forest (May 21st, 2007) the 1 grain tablet should be released to the wholesalers during the first week in June. The other strengths will follow during June - but the Customer Rep could not be more specific about dates.

I asked my Pharmacist to contact Forest 6/9/07. He was told that there was a problem with the manufacturing process. The ANTICIPATED arrival for the 30 mg 1/2 tab is 6/29. One can only hope. I got a temporary prescription for another med from my doctor. In the past, during the Thyrolar recall I had to take a different medication for a year. I did OK but not the best. Thyrolar works very well for me and I hope Forest will be able to make it available soon.

I have been treated RIA. Synthroid does not help. Synthroid and Cytomel do not help me. I froze all summer when I tried Armour. Thyrolar has been the only medicine that helped me stay stable. I have gained 30 lbs. while it has been off the market, I have trouble breathing now and I do not eat very much at all. It is almost like I get a case of Addisons without the Thyrolar.
This could be a case of life or death without the medication. My thyroid is the size of a peanut and dead. Is there a thyroid transplant? Please bring back my medication. I had some for a few months last Fall. The distention went back down and I was fine again. What ever the problem is-
please set up help for those of us that need this medication.

There is not a thyroid transplant. I do not need mine removed. I need Thyrolar. I am now hypothyroid. Please read your commens.

I think Forest Labs owes an explanation to all of the consumers who use(d) Thyrolar. This situation is ridiculous and really unfair to people whose bodies only respond to Thyrolar. This is so frustrating. I took Thyrolar and have been waiting every month since January to get my medicine. I did not know I could get it in other strenghts. This is why Forest should have contacted the people who take this medicine!

(10) S. Creech says:

I would like to state (again) I do not have a working thyroid. There are many people given the radioactive iodine treatment. It generally kills the thyroid. Synthroid shows up in the numbers, but I look like a potential case of walking myxedema and/or Addisons (I was tested-negative) without the Thyrolar. Are there other strengths available? I am frustrated also and getting desparate. I depend on the medications and must function in a professional capacity.

(11) Cmorgan says:

I am the same as all of the above. I do not understand why this continues to happen. Everytime they decide to take the thyrolar off the market the patient is the one that continues to suffer. It is hard for people to understand when they do not have to deal with this issue on a day to day bases. Add to this the fear of when the medication will not be available. I have tried all the other thyroid medications and they do not work!!! Please be considerate of the most important people who are the patient.
