Dear Betty Blount at Public Citizen: From One Nurse to Another

Thursday September 4, 2003
Betty -- I realize that your heart lies in the right place to help the citizens discern what is good for them. I too am a ER RN...still practicing. I agree with Mary Shomon that the information in your article is misguided and inaccurate. This is not being honest with the public or a customer service. Please correct this information. We must give the public accurate information so they can make wise decisions for their bodies. Too long we put complete faith in our doctors and the system to care for us. This is going to be the fall of the system. We must empower the people to care for themselves...

We have stated and inferred to the public they can't possibly know how to care for themselves or make wise decisions. This is arrogant and not what the health system is suppose to do. It's suppose to partner with people to help them know their options. Their decisions are theirs only. Many times we frighten them into decisions which are not good for them. Or we tell them only what we heard which may be only a piece of the pie and may not be accurate. We have to educate truthfully and let people customize their health for their unique needs.

Please be careful about your opinions on herbs and supplements.....they helped me when I could not eat a good diet. They were not prescribed by a doctor. If I went by what my doctors said I would not be here.

I am on a healthy diet and making it back with Armour and herbs and supplements. I had many adverse reactions to meds and no doctor could tell me what to eat or take that would be good for my body. I was thrown prescriptions to "try" without thought to the big picture. I decided I had to put all the pieces together myself. We all take risks no matter our decision in any area. It's called choice. It's what makes our country strong and what our freedom is founded on. Every person must be accurately informed so THEY can choose their risks and benefits. I had to educate myself. Rather than take many meds that have side effects and are foreign synthetic copies of natural substances I chose to educate myself to my options. I hope Public Citizen is here to educate and provide the public accurate information to make wise decisions. I hope they will research all sides of the issue before they publish information. Many people count on that the information they get from you is accurate and well researched. And being that we are all human, I hope that when they realize they may not have given all the information or it's presentation is misguiding they will correct it.

This is what I believe the public expects from Public Citizen.
